The Role: Commercial Sewing Machine Operator Full-Time

Responsible for the day to day operation of a sewing machine to perform sewing operations on various Faribault Woolen Mill products. This position would be responsible for operating and tending to industrial machines. A solid knowledge of sewing machinery and the garments industry is necessary for this position. Candidate must possess sound hand-eye coordination and be able to cope with moderate physical effort. This is a 8 hour a per week job opportunity.

 Core Responsibilities:

  • Refer to orders for sewing garments and select appropriate materials
  • Ensure that all materials and auxiliary supplies are available prior to beginning work
  • Start sewing machinery at the beginning of a shift and test it for proper functionality
  • Address any discrepancies or problems faced during the testing period
  • Draw threads through needles and adjust machine functions to meet the requirements of the sewing project
  • Position materials under needles to sew them together or make patterns
  • Replace and rethread needles for a subsequent project or in case of the existing one needing more thread
  • Sew missing stitches or replacement parts in accordance to repair instructions provided
  • Observe operations to detect any faults or defects in stitching
  • Notify supervisors of any problems or discrepancies during the sewing process
  • Ensure that the finished product conforms to the design and merchandizing instructions provided in the work order
  • Ensure that excess material or threads are cut away from the finished product
  • Trim finished garments using scissors and cutters
  • Perform general and preventative maintenance tasks on sewing machines to ensure their longevity
  • Examine finished garments for compliance and ensure that appropriate tags are sewed on them
  • Count number of garments stitched during a shift and record this information in company provided logs
  • Responsible for mounting attachments such as needles and pattern blades and adjusting machines according to the specifications provided to them
  • Ability to thread, tension, adjust stitch length, and perform basic troubleshooting. Understands the auto back-tack function and can sew labels neatly.
  • Single Needle Efficiency- Averages 35-45 labels/hour while maintaining quality.
  • Whipper Ability- To thread, tension, and perform basic troubleshooting. Sews straight and even without causing edges of fabric to buckle. Able to efficiently pull tails, sew labels, and avoid skips.
  • Whipper Efficiency- Averages 24-30 Throws/hour while maintaining quality.
  • Serger Ability- To thread, tension machine, and change needles. Understands how stitch length affects product and is able to change cams. Demonstrated ability to sew straight and even lines and neat, rounded corners.
  • Serger Efficiency- Averages 26-30 twin blankets/hour while maintaining quality.
  • Self-Hem Ability- To sew 8-11 twin blankets/hour while maintaining quality. Is able to match stripes on hems.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • 1-3 years of industrial sewing machine experience
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision
  • Attention to detail
  • Having good knowledge of quality control analysis
  • Having good time management skills, ability to multi-task, think critically and make sound decisions


  • Prior sewing experience preferred
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to learn the operation of an industrial sewing machine
  • Must be able to follow all safety rules
  • Sustained employment of at least 6 months
  • Prior experience in an industrial environment preferred
  • Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, push, and pull for the duration of a 8-hour shift
